Obituary of Paul M Cantwell

Paul M. Cantwell, Jr. of Malone died unexpectedly Monday night at the University of Vermont Medical Center with his wife of fifty-four years Susanna Revesz Cantwell and his three daughters by his side. Paul was born in Malone, NY on March 4, 1942, the son of the late Paul M. Cantwell, Sr. and Elisabeth Bellows Cantwell. He attended Franklin Academy and graduated in 1959. He later attended Union College and Albany Law School of Union University. After law school, he returned to Malone to join his father at the Law Offices of Cantwell & Cantwell where he continued to practice until January 2020. He served as Malone Town Attorney for 17 years and Franklin County Attorney for 4 years. Paul was the attorney for Paul Smith’s College and served on the Paul Smith’s College Board of Trustees since 1993. Paul was a longstanding attorney for Alice Hyde Memorial Hospital of Malone. He was on the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank, becoming President of the Bank until it was sold to Community Bank in 2001, then serving on the Board of Directors of Community Bank (2001-2012) and as Chairman (2006- 2010). Paul had a strong commitment to his community and dedicated his life to having a positive impact on it. He served on numerous community boards including Franklin Academy Board of Trustees, Morningside Cemetery, Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), Life Flight, Adirondack Community Bank Advisory Board, and member of the Franklin County Bar Association. First and foremost, Paul loved spending time with his family. Paul and Susy have three daughters Julia (Nathan) Race, Kathleen Cantwell, and Ginger (Craig) Carriero. His five grandchildren were his pride and joy: Eli and Katherine Race, Parker Cantwell, and Trent and Chase Carriero. Paul has a brother and sister in-law James and Dorothy Cantwell of Charleston, SC. Beyond his love for his profession and his community, Paul’s passion was traveling. He and Susy regularly explored the world visiting 6 of the 7 continents. He spent the time that he was not traveling planning his next journey or recounting his latest adventures. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 14th at Frary-Spaulding Funeral Home between the hours of 4pm and 7pm. Burial service will be held Saturday, May 15th at Morningside Cemetery in Malone at 11am; all are welcome to attend to celebrate Paul. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Franklin Academy Board of Trustees Cantwell Scholarship or Cantwell Family Memorial Scholarships Fund at Paul Smith’s College, Paul Smiths, New York.
