Obituary of Bernard Scott Steuart

Bernard “Bernie” Steuart, age 94, went home to be with the Lord on January 31, 2022. He was born in Schenectady, NY in 1927 to James and Amy (Scott) Steuart. In his youth he was an altar boy, roller skated, did yo-yo tricks, camped, and fished. He delivered for Freihofer’s in a horse-drawn bread wagon and was a lineman for Ma Bell. Wanting to defend his country, he joined the Navy and served in WWll and Korea. Bernie served as an Honorary Commander of Plattsburgh Air Force Bases 528th and 529th Bomb Squadrons. He loved participating in the Honor Flight parades and activities and was thrilled to have a flight in the B-17 at age 91! He oversaw positive change while serving as President of the Peru Central School board and spent decades officiating local high school sports. A businessman for thirty years, he owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Plattsburgh, NY with his wife, Sue. In his spare time, Bernie loved to fish, hunt, play cards, and garden. He exemplified the best qualities that any man can aspire to and can be held up as an example of a kind and generous spirit. Bernie was a giant of a man who cast a long and loving shadow on all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Harold Patterson; brothers George and James Steuart; and a granddaughter Melissa Mazzo (Rich) Isherwood. Bernie is lovingly remembered by Sue Bratt Steuart, his wife of 55 years; children, Bonnye Steuart; Judy (Gary) Cosman; David Tuttle; Benjamin Tuttle; Michael Tuttle; Andrew Steuart; Rebecca (Bob) Jones; and Amy (Todd) Witte; a brother, Robert (Cheryl) Patterson; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Although he will be greatly missed, we rejoice knowing that Bernie is now in heaven with his Savior. A Celebration of Life is planned for the spring.
