Obituary of Scott A Miller

Scott A. Miller, 69, of Malone, NY passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 at his home after a long illness. He was born February 14, 1952 in Massena to Preston and Marge Miller. He graduated from Franklin Academy in 1970. He continued his education at SUNY Canton majoring in Business Administration. In 1975 he graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a degree in Elementary Education. While at Plattsburgh he obtained a teaching assistant position at a local school for children with disabilities. This led him to a residential counselor position with Citizen Advocates (North Star Industries) in 1976. He subsequently worked as a vocational evaluator and then work center director. When the agency expanded he developed a new day treatment program and became Director of Services. He developed residential, supported employment, and at-home habilitation services. For many years he supervised the agency’s vocational day treatment programs in Malone and Saranac Lake. He continued in this position until 2014 with 38 years of service. Scott wanted to thank his wonderful staff and friends there who created an environment where he enjoyed going to work every day. He was very proud of their efforts to help the disabled citizens of Franklin County. Scott enjoyed furniture making, renovating his home, and spending time with family. He loved to cook and started baking in his later years. He was known for his offbeat sense of humor. He liked movies, music, the New York Yankees, and a cold Coors Light. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Debby (Venema); sons Joshua Miller of Clifton Park and Ryan Miller of Plattsburgh; his brother Colin (Kathy) Miller of North Bangor; sisters Carolyn Miller of Plattsburgh and Jane (Dennis) Arseneault of Plattsburgh; sister-in-law Sherilyn (Tom) Sabin of Prospect, KY; sister-in-law Gayle (Malcolm) Miner of Malone; brother-in-law Kurt Venema of Hartford, CT; sister-in-law Cynthia King of Moira; two grandchildren, Elaina and Alexander; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents. In keeping with Scott’s wishes, there will be no public services. Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country. Arrangements have been entrusted to Frary Funeral Homes of Malone.
