Obituary of Joseph Haszonics

Joseph John Haszonics of Long Lake passed away at Mercy Living Center on May 25, 2020. He was 96 years old. A burial service will take place on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at 11:00AM at Long Lake Cemetery. Arrangments are under the care and direction of Frary-Stuart Funeral Home, Tupper Lake. Joseph is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth; two sons, Steven and Joseph; and granddaughters, Violet and Brianna. He is predeceased by his parents and two sons, Jon and Andrew. Joseph was born and brought up in Passaic, NJ, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Barna Haszonics. After high school, John joined the Army. He is a World War II veteran where he was a paratrooper in the 511th inf. He was also stationed in the Philippines and was in the Army of occupation in Japan after their surrender. Following his discharge, Joseph attended and graduated from the University of Missouri of Journalism. He spent many years as a writer and editor for magazines and newspapers in New Jersey, New York, and Florida. After his retirement, Joseph started hiking. He hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Adirondack High Peaks. He wrote and published “Trail Days,” a story of his experience in the Appalachian Trail.
