I met Anita Countryman in 1984, when we both became interested in the history of our Countryman ancestors. [Our grandparents, Edgar J. Countryman and Cassie Countryman Wilson were siblings.] There was almost no one alive who knew very much. And our quest was complicated by the fact that the family wasn't close, partly the result of an alcoholic great-grandfather and a great grandmother, who was the victim of domestic abuse, and many divorces that further pushed family members apart. Thanks to Stephen Countryman, a boy in Prescott, Ont. who wrote about his family for a school project in school, we discovered William Countryman who had come to Prescott in the 1830s, purchased a farm and had a large family. Eventually, Stephen's brother, Sonny Countryman, brought us in touch with Paul Countryman who was working on the book, "Jacob Countryman, United Empire Loyalist," about our mutual ancestor. Anita and I worked to gather information for the book on the Ogdensburg Countrymans. Anita and I stayed in touch, sharing our discoveries. She was so excited when I found our Denny ancestors in the Quebec Archives on the Cornwall Reservation. We continued to work together on our elusive Sullivan ancestor, who suddenly appeared in Ogdensburg in th 1870s, an Irish famine immigrant, but thanks to frequent fires in Ogdensburg, important records were lost. I will miss Anita's curiosity & big heart. She struggled most of her life with financial issues, but was always committed to learning more. Anita wrote me in January about her terminal cancer diagnosis, "but I am prepared." I will miss her strength and love of history.
