Obituary of Grover Cleveland Curtis III

Grover Cleveland Curtis, III, age 63, of Ogdensburg, NY passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. There will be no funeral services; however, celebrations of life will be held in New York and Maine. Friends and family will be invited once a date is established. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Grover was born on June 23, 1956, in Belfast, ME, the son of Marie Pearl and Grover C. Curtis, Jr. He graduated from Bangor High School. Grover was employed as a cook at several local restaurants including The Ship in Alexandria Bay, NY. Grover is survived by his 15 year-companion, Donna Meashaw, of Ogdensburg along with her daughters, Danielle and Jennifer and their respective husbands, James and Daniel. Grover is also survived by his son, Josh and daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Byran. Grover will also be missed by several grandchildren, co-workers, and close friends. Grover was more affectionately known by his six surviving siblings as “Sonny.” His sister Darlene Chubbuck lovingly remembered spending much of their young adulthood together. Darlene was extremely protective of Sonny and came to his rescue whenever he needed help from school bullies. She recalled Sonny always had a kind heart. His sister Sheila Mayhey fondly recalled Sonny baking cakes on her birthday and escorting her to work where she once received a cake for peeling 50 pounds of potatoes. Sheila was very proud to have shared that celebration with her brother Sonny. His final sister, Sharon Pomeroy, has recollections of Sonny buying her little trinkets or food when she came to visit. Michael Curtis reminisced about his brother’s enthusiastic love for wrestling and pinning down his little brothers but also teaching them how to defend themselves. Rodney Curtis smiled as he thought about Sonny desperately trying to teach him how to bake; however, Rodney was more interested in drinking beer and eating the pie since he lacked the innate talent to make it. Sonny’s youngest surviving brother, Darrell Curtis, easily recalled Sonny’s love to drive fast and bake incredible bread with whatever ingredients were in the house. Sonny’s brothers and sisters expressed diverse and varying memories; however, they all unconditionally expressed what a hard worker Sonny was. He barely slept before his next shift; setting an example of a fine work ethic for everyone. Sonny was predeceased by two siblings, Nettie Beathem and Roland Curtis who we expect have already shared their memories with him. Sonny enjoyed making holiday meals, The Patriots, fishing, going to St. Lawrence hockey games, and spending time with family and friends; especially Joey and Jackson Pray. He enjoyed going to yard sales, collecting eagles, and watching westerns. His passion in life has always been bringing joy to people through his exceptional baking and culinary skills. Sonny was one of the nicest people anyone could ever have met. He would do anything for anyone and never expressed a negative word. We are all better people for having had him in our lives. Grover “Sonny” Curtis will be fondly remembered and truly missed. Rest in peace brother, father, companion, friend.
