Obituary of Davalene A Layng
Davalene Layng, 75, of Ogdensburg, NY passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by her husband Robert Layng; two sons, Robert (Lenore) Layng Jr., David (Cyndi) Layng; two daughters, Kristine (Matt) Weber, and Kathleen Layng; a sister, Cheryl (Louis) Wilcox, and a brother, Gary Sharpe; five grandchildren (Sheena (Mark), Andrew (Brooke), Miles, Katie, and Hailey), two great-grandchildren (Wylyn and Ellie); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Peggy Tomah, a brother, Brian Sharpe, a sister-in-law, Sandy Sharpe, and a son-in-law, Justin Shipman.
Davalene was born on December 11, 1943, the daughter of David and Kathleen (Lavair) Sharpe. She graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School. Davalene married J. Robert Layng on July 17, 1965. She and Bob owned and operated Austin Layng Inc. for over 40 years, where she held the title of boss and coffee break coordinator. “Time for ten!”
Davalene spent her life caring for others, whether she knew them or not. She enjoyed hitting the hard 8 on the craps table and traveling with her family, whether it was around the world, across the country, or just downtown for a slice of peanut butter pie. She was at every game, sporting event, concert, or union convention that she could possibly attend.
She was challenged by cancer and for 15 years stood toe to toe and would not let it beat her (and it didn’t!). Her faith and laughter gave her a strength which inspired anyone fortunate enough to know her. Her greatest pride was her family. She always had something to say and taught us all to stop and smell the flowers and to eat the frosting first.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 6-8PM at Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Funeral Mass will be held at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg, on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at 1:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or Notre Dame Heritage Fund.
